In my travels, I found an exquisitely grained board of Black Walnut. I had been carving American Basswood for so long, I had forgotten about the nature of this particular wood, and I spent a fortune on the 4x14x4 foot board. It was so beautiful, I just knew a carving would show off and enhance the figure. Black Walnut is a very hard, brittle wood, which I soon discovered when I began work on it. It took 3 yrs of stop and go work to complete this Shagya Arabian Stallion. The breed is ordinarily white, but on occasion, there is a black. He is 11½ long by 11 inches tall, and is finished with a matt polyurethane. He has been SOLD.
